R house is a new build 2 storey dwelling located to the rear of a residential street in the Mill Road Conservation Area in Cambridge. The site was previously a row of parking garages which were largely unused.
Our client asked us to design for her a distinctive, innovative family home. The location proved challenging as the site is surrounded by existing buildings right up to 2 of the boundaries, there are mature trees up to one of the other boundaries and the access to the site is narrow and there was a requirement to keep this accessible at all times during the build.
From the outset we recognised the need for the new house to create its own open space to avoid the feeling of being overlooked from the adjacent buildings. This is achieved by incorporating terraces to the front and rear providing private outside space. The rear terrace incorporates walk-on roof lights to let light into the deep plan of the ground floor level. The front terrace has a patterned screen to create both privacy inside but also introduces a geometric pattern which is also reflected in the encaustic tiles to the ground floor. The external materials are a black brick which is laid in a textured pattern to the ground floor level, anodised bronze framed windows, and natural oak to the stair and floor finishes. The ground level also has a polished concrete floor finish. We have really enjoyed the design of this house and assisting the client in her selection of the finishes. The house is due for completion in spring 2018.
