1930s SUBURBAN CONVERSION
The project was for the conversion of square planned, 1930’s detached house in the suburbs of Cambridge. The plan form was very traditional, with a staircase running up an external wall from just inside the front door and the three bedrooms on the first floor radiating off from the landing at the top. The pyramid shape of the roof that sat upon the square plan form made the option of extending upwards very problematic and also expensive. We discovered, however, that by moving the staircase to the centre of the house and with a metre wide extension to the side and a small extension to the rear, we were able to create a spacious, light filled home with four bedrooms and three bathrooms upstairs. The central staircase now becomes a focal point in the middle of the house, and allows the unexpected drama of a triple height space over the small study/library.
Works to the outside of the house and a landscaping scheme are ongoing and due to finish in the summer of 2019
