We were asked to remodel and extend this mid-terrace Victorian property in the Mill Road Conservation Area in Cambridge.
Originally the house was a 2 storey property with a ground floor bathroom to the rear blocking rear access to the garden. There were 2 bedrooms to the first floor with a poorly constructed rear addition over the kitchen below, this room was cold and damp, issues which clearly needed to be addressed.
The brief was to remodel to provide an upstairs bathroom and 3 bedrooms, with a large open plan kitchen to the rear with good access and views to the charming courtyard style garden.
Due to the arrangement of the plan the first floor bathroom was tricky to incorporate as we wanted to provide natural light and ventilation into the space. We achieved this by forming a scoop from loft level through the roof space for an opening roof-light. An additional bedroom has been created in the loft space with more head height achieved by lowering the ceiling level to the rooms below.
The new kitchen dining area to the ground floor is top lit with roof-lights and is a lovely place to be, and with the client’s collection of furniture and fittings creates quite a distinctive space with views and access into the garden.
